One panel will explore the fast-changing dimensions of Foreign Direct Investment. The third panel will focus on risk and current theories about mitigating risk in low probability but high consequence disasters, including SARS. The panel discussion are sponsored by INSEAD.

Panel #1: Foreign Direct Investment in China

FDI in China is a high priority for many industries, countries and companies. There are as many stories of spectacular failure as there are of dizzying success. Katsutoshi Takeda, Chairman of Mitsubishi Corporation China, will give the Keynote Address, which will be followed by a panel discussion on FDI in specific industries. Experienced investors from a variety of industries will be present to share their successes and failures. Once again, we will focus on the conference theme of "Connecting", in this case among and between alumni interested in FDI in China. Current panelists are:

Panel #2: China: The World's Workshop

We will hear from executives who anticipate the further "hollowing out" of industry in their countries. We will hear from Chinese executives, who are in the midst of one of the world's greatest boom industries, namely the transfer of manufacturing and service functions from around the world to the inexpensive and highly skilled Chinese marketplace. Finally, we will hear from representatives of countries and industries which already anticipate another wave of change, this time transferring manufacturing to countries with even lower costs than China, such as India, Cambodia and Vietnam. Panelists will include:

  • Diane E. Long, Vice President, China Strategic Sourcing Initiative and General Manager, Shanghai, Liz Claiborne International, Ltd.

  • Wharton Professor of Management Stephen Kobrin will be the faculty moderator of this panel.
Panel #3: Interdependent Security

The third panel will focus on an issue that is of enormous importance to China, namely the interdependency of security and risk problems. The panel will explore and discuss the actions that your firm can take to reduce the risks from potentially catastrophic risks, including insurance, third party inspections, well-enforced regulations and standards promulgated by the government or industry trade associations. Special emphasis will be placed on SARS as an example of a low probability but high consequence event. Current panelists include:

  • Yang Xiaodu, Vice Mayor, Shanghai Municipal Government
  • Kennedy Wong, Managing Partner, Philip K.H. Wong, Kennedy Y.H. Wong & Co., Hong Kong

Panel #4: The Wharton Global Family Alliance (WGFA)

Open Forum: Family Branding and Marketplace Advantage

Family businesses are uniquely well positioned to address intense marketplace competition and volatility by using strengths drawn from their family heritage and value systems. This unique interactive session is designed to enable intensive dialogue and exchange of ideas and experiences among participants on this and other topical issues of concern to family businesses. Examples include topics such as the elements of transformational leadership that build wealth and create the foundation for sustainable value over generations; trans-generational knowledge transfer; the effects of family ownership, management, and control on your family firm's value; and the impact on value of alternative control mechanisms.
